Sporting KC takes 10-Count again in MLS playoffs

Same song, fourth verse. Since Sporting KC won the 2013 MLS Cup, they have lost four consecutive MLS knockout-round losses in the MLS playoffs.

This year, it was Houston taking SKC out in extra-time 1-0 the third time in the past seven years the Dynamo dispatched Sporting in the playoffs.  This may bode well for Houston as each of previous two years, the team which has eliminated Sporting KC has gone on to win the championship.

Will Geary plays close to the ground as anchor of KSU defense

At 6-feet, 290 pounds, Will Geary looks like a college defensive tackle straight out of central casting.

Long-known as the strongest Kansas State player, Geary defers, claiming back-up tackle Raymond Price should get that label. But he will give in a little, saying, “Okay, maybe on some lists (I am).”

His weight-room numbers are staggering. He says his best bench press is “about 410 right now.” His best squat is about 630 pounds, and his best clean is 395.

The burly senior anchors the middle of the defensive line and pretty much goes unnoticed. He’s fine with that. Some of it comes with the territory of being a defensive tackle, and some of it is the low-key personality of Geary.

Five Kansas Jayhawks football captains are each winners

The greatest honor a Kansas Jayhawks football player can achieve is to be named a captain by his teammates. The role speaks volumes about the player’s status on the team, his character, his drive, his work ethic and the way he carries himself on and off the field.

The Jayhawks have five captains this season: junior linebacker Joe Dineen Jr., junior wide receiver Jeremiah Booker, junior defensive tackle Daniel Wise, junior defensive end Dorance Armstrong Jr. and senior running back Denzell Evans, who is out for the year with a knee injury.

Jayhawks coach David Beaty wouldn’t trade his captains for any players in the country.
