Former ’85 Royals partied like it was 1985 in Arizona!

'85 Royals

FEBRUARY 2015 – During the month of January for the last 10 years, I have been fortunate to attend the Kansas City Royals Fantasy Camp in Surprise, Arizona.

This year’s camp was especially memorable because it was kind of like a reunion for the members of the 1985 World Championship team.  The players in camp included Steve Balboni, Buddy Biancalana, Bud Black, George Brett, Mark Gubicza, Mark Huismann, Charlie Leibrandt, Dennis Leonard, Hal McRae, Darryl Motley, Greg Pryor (that would be me), Jamie Quirk, Bret Saberhagen, Pat Sheridan, Jim Sundberg, John Wathan and Willie Wilson. Also attending were Royals Hall of Famers, John Mayberry and Jeff Montgomery.

For a fee, a limited number of Royals baseball fans attended the camp and were placed on one of six different teams and “managed” by three different Royals alums.  Campers play games against other teams and learn the fine points of baseball.

The best part of the week is after the games are over for the day. Alums mingle with the campers in the clubhouse and share stories about their careers and explain what it was like to play in the show.

Royals ReportAt camps end, campers thanked the members of the 1985 team for helping to make the camp special.  Many expressed how much the Royals and baseball have been such a great part of their lives. Many campers have attended multiple Fantasy Camps.

One of my favorite campers is Byron “The Professor” Strom.  Byron is a former college chemistry professor from Iowa who has attended the past 10 Royals Fantasy Camps in Arizona.  To commemorate his love of the camp, the Royals gave The Professor a Royals jersey with No. 85, which was signed by all of the alumni.

As a player on the ’85 team, it was wonderful to see many of my old teammates.  Our ’85 team had a special bond and we overcame great obstacles to win the World Series championship. In 1984 we won the AL West, but lost the AL playoffs to the Detroit Tigers, who then went on to beat the San Diego Padres in the World Series. Royals first base coach Rusty Kuntz played for the 1984 Tigers.

Most of us came back to spring training in ’85 very eager to get back to the postseason. We accomplished the ultimate goal of every MLB player – to get a World Series ring. Even though the spirit of all of the alums at camp remains youthful, it was evident all of us are affected by the aging process.

The success of last season’s American League Champion Royals rejuvenated the fans and created “new” Royals fans all over the country. We are eagerly waiting for our team to return this month for spring training in Surprise and then in April back to Kansas City to begin another quest for a World Series trophy.

Our core players – Alex Gordon, Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar, Salvador Perez, Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas, Omar Infante, Jeremy Guthrie, Jason Vargas, Yordano Ventura, Danny Duffy, Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis and Greg Holland – are still on the roster.  I hope all of these players and our newest Royals are ready for the “grind” and make it back to the postseason play.
