Royals will have big shoes to fill for the 2018 season

There will be baseball at Kaufman Stadium in 2018, but the Kansas City Royals of the past six years will not look anything like the new model.

The teams that went to back-to-back World Series in 2014-15 won’t resemble the 2018 squad. After topping the New York Mets in the 2015 World Series, the Royals have played sub-.500 baseball.

Nine – count ’em – Royals have applied for free agency. The list starts with Eric Hosmer, Mike Moustakas and Lorenzo Cain, all who rejected qualifying offers to test the free agent markets.  The others are Jason Vargas, Alcides Escobar, Mike Minor, Melky Cabrera, Peter Moylan and Trevor Cahill.

Reality is beginning to set in – although the Royals’ front office probably knew all the time – that bringing back any of the big three appears to be miniscule.

KC Royals started and ended the 2017 season with disappointment

The hole was Grand Canyon-deep from the beginning. The Royals dropped eight straight in late April. They lost 20 of their first 30 games, putting them seven games out on May 7.

Yet, they slowly climbed out of that. They went 17-9 in June and in late July they reeled off a nine-game winning streak. They were seven-games above .500 on July 28. They moved to within 1 ½ games of the division-leading Cleveland Indians.

General manager Dayton Moore went all in, acquiring Melky Cabrera from the Chicago White Sox and pitchers Trevor Cahill, Ryan Buchter and Brandon Maurer from the San Diego Padres.

Moore said he has no regrets about the trades with the hopes of giving this group of Royals one more chance to make it to post-season.

It did not happen.

Happy Festivus KC – Our Top Grievances for Sports in 2016

DECEMBER 2016Happy Festivus KC! Among all the celebrations each holiday season, this might be one of my favorites to recognize and celebrate. For those of you who don’t know what Festivus is, I’ve included a link here from the episode of “Seinfeld” that created this holiday.

One of this holiday’s traditions is the airing of grievances, in which you tell people all the ways they have disappointed you this year. While this year has had some great moments for Kansas City teams, there have been some disappointments.

To honor this tradition, here are the top five grievances about our local sports teams and players I would like to air on this day of Festivus (Just a note, I have nothing against these players/teams, they have just been disappointing this year). In the words of Frank Costanza, “I’ve got a lot of problems with you people! Now you’re going to hear about it!”
